Review of Junction City, Kansas

Small Military Town
Star Rating - 10/7/2018
I moved to JC in 2009 because the government made me. Husband was active duty army. We brought two children with us. At the time they were high school and elementary school age. We chose JC as opposed to surrounding areas such as Manhattan or Abilene because of the school district. The school system offers a lot for the students. Both children graduated from the school system are now very successful in their endeavors. The downside of JC is there isn't much to do here. If you are an outdoors type you'll enjoy the local lakes, hunting etc. Other than that you have to drive. Manhattan is 30 minutes away and there you can find restaurants and shopping. K-State is there so it is a college town. Either JC or Manhattan has a nice movie theater. However any other type of entertainment your going to Wichita or KC.

Employment opportunities are either the school district or Ft Riley. Or you can commute to Manhattan 30 minutes. Cost of living is ok. Housing isn't that expensive. Local taxes are high though.

Weather is not too bad but it does get cold here and snows. Depending on the year it can be a short snow season or a long one.

JC is a farming and rural community. They support their military. It is a small town where everyone knows everyone. Especially those that have grown up here.

Aesthetically it's not very pretty. High poverty areas. West of I70 is the newer areas and a new high school is being built in the area.
